Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay – A missing pair of slippers has sparked a beach brawl between an American national and local tourists in an island resort here on Saturday afternoon, March 23.
Police Major Helen Galvez, Police Regional Office 9 (PRO9) information officer said American Steven Barry Joyce, 58, and a Filipino companion, Roperto Zungkuya Jr., 30, had reported to the Ipil Municipal Police Station an incident in Buluan Island in Ipil at around 3:30 p.m. claiming that he and his American companion were mauled by a group of local tourists.
An investigation showed that while Joyce was looking for his missing slippers, a female companion inquired from a group of local tourists if they had seen the missing footwear.
The tourists told the female companion they did not see the slippers but Joyce reportedly pushed one of the local tourists which resulted to a brawl.
It was alleged by witnesses the group of Joyce provoked the group of local tourists.
An eyewitness claimed he had not seen “the American being mauled by Filipino tourists but he was the one who attempted to box one of the tourists.”
The American, according to an eyewitness, appeared to have been intoxicated as he “stumbled that resulted in his injuries.”
But both Joyce and his companion, Zungkuya, alleged they were mauled. (jm)
