The beneficiaries of the government’s anti-poverty flagship program will receive rice instead of cash starting this month.
Agriculture Secretary William Dar had proposed the idea to help the rice farmers adversely affected with the influx of imported rice.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Dar said, has already expressed willingness to implement the new scheme under its Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).
The DSWD sets aside some P28 billion as rice subsidy to all its beneficiaries. Each beneficiary receives P600 per month.
The proposal is why not “give rice this time around?” Dar said, adding the DSWD is open.
As a result, Dar explained, the 4Ps beneficiaries will start receiving rice this month. The rice will be purchased from the NFA and participating provincial governments.
The scheme will help the rice farmers as the farm gate price of palay had dipped to its lowest, P7 to P10 per kilo.
Republic Act 11203, known as the Rice Tariffication Law, lifted the Quantitative Restriction (QR) in rice importation.
Meanwhile, Sen. Francis Pangilinan sought a probe on the adverse effects of the law on the rice farmers. (Antonio Manaytay-Mindanao Sun/ Featured Image: Contributed)
