Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay – The provincial government is stepping up support to farmers amid spiralling of cost of farm production in the form of loans and training to improve production.
Gov. Wilter Palma presented the plan of the provincial government during the Farmers Field School Graduation held Monday as part of the opening day of the 18th founding anniversary of the province. Some 357 farmers had completed the on-air field school on Integrated Pest Management on Rice and Corn Production.
The province, which celebrates its 18th founding anniversary, is home to about 50,000 hectares of both irrigated and rain-fed rice fields.
Palma said the Department of Agriculture had released P10 million which is part of the P100-million loan package.
He said the provincial government has also provided P20 million as its counterpart funding.
The loans with enhancement and technological skills transfer, according to the governor, will eventually reduce the cost of production.
Each rice farmer, under the program, can avail a loan of P20,000 per hectare with one percent interest. (jm)
